Roshunda before with Perm

How long have you been natural?
I have been natural since 2009 and what a Journey!

What inspired you to go natural?
My husband inspired me to go natural or should I say … He basically told me I should show my natural texture hair. I was very apprehensive to say the least.

How did you transition?
I transitioned by wearing a sew in. It wasn’t difficult because that was my staple hair style throughout High school and College. My hairstylist would take out the sew in then clip off some of the perm, braid my hair back up and put in the sew in. That was my process for about a year.

What is your natural hair routine?
My natural hair routine consist of weekly wash, condition, oil, detangle and twist or braid for a twist out or braid out. Right now I am apart of a facebook groupLoving Kinky Curls” that announced a challenge of 90 days of protective styling so I am apart of that challenge- roll-tuck and pin, plat braids, twists and pinups is my current style options.

Whats your favorite natural hairstyle?
I usually change my hair style weekly. I enjoy wearing a classic pin-up or big braid out! Love It!

What suggestions do you have for new naturals or those considering going natural?
I would suggest to newly naturals- don’t be scared to show your natural texture hair. Join a forum, group, and attend meetups for encouragement if needed. Please don’t do what I did and color your hair at home to stay “stylish”. Go to a professional. My experience with color caused me to have damaged- dry hair and resulted in massive breakage that needed to be drastically cut.  If you are considering going natural- Just do it. The greatest thing about our hair is that it is versatile. If you don’t like curly/kinky hair you can straighten your hair without chemicals to achieve the look you desire.

Tell us more about your decision to retake your wedding photos?
I married my high school sweetheart and the love of my life Sept 26 almost 1 year ago. I searched youtube and black hair magazines for a bridal natural hair style that was similar to my hair length but I didn’t find anything. My mom suggested that I wear a sew-in. At first I said NO but moving towards the wedding date with no idea of what to do with my hair I gave in – walked down the aisle with weave. I regretted it.
I shared my regret a with friend of ours and she entered us in a contest for the most beautiful couple with Llove Studio photography. We sent in our wedding pics to enter and I explained my desire to wear my natural texture hair with my wedding dress and we won! It was such a fun shoot and I am so glad I had a chance to wear my wedding dress again. Show the “real me”.  I wore a lovely twist out.

What do you like most about being natural?
What I like most about being natural is chemical free hair. I researched the effects of chemicals being applied near the scalp year after year and it can cause damage to brain cells.

What do you find most challenging?
What I like least about natural hair is the drastic shrinkage. I have gotten use to it now but  at times it is so small compared to my regular length. But hey I will take the greater good for a tad bit of bad any day. Thank You for allowing me to share my hair tips and thoughts.
