Mia is a very spunky and upbeat natural, who believes in second chances! Healthy living and beautiful hair are certainly her forte. This “round the way” natural  beauty has learned how to maintain her coif with the help of different products and YouTube channels. Mia uses various styles to protect and maintain her hair, especially when she is working out. Little by little Mia and other naturals are debunking the myth that African-American women “don’t workout.” The proof is in the pudding here, Mia looks absolutely stunning!

Marita A: How long have you been natural?

Mia: I’ve been natural this time for seven years. This is my second time. The first time was fifteen years ago, I was natural for about 5 years. This time is different because I’ve educated myself on how to properly care for my natural hair. There are many more products and information readily available to assist you with the transition.

Marita A: What inspired you to go natural?

Mia: Initially it was because I work out a lot and my relaxed hair was becoming too damaged from the constant sweating and use of heating appliances. Now it’s also a part of my journey towards leading a more holistic and healthy lifestyle. My hair responds well to being chemical free and a plant based diet.

Marita A: What was the most difficult part of transitioning to natural?

Mia: The “in between” stages were most difficult. I loved it short but eventually wanted more style options. I wore a weave to allow it to grow out and it was so low maintenance which worked great with my active lifestyle.

Marita A: How did your family, friends, spouse or significant other react to your hair’s new kinky texture?

Mia: My friends and family have been very supportive. My Mom is natural and so are many of my cousins and friends. Most of my male friends are also very receptive to my natural look.

Marita A: Have you tried to convert any of your friends or family members into naturalistas?

Mia: Actually, I haven’t had to convert them. They have done it willingly and had been thinking about it but took the leap as they witnessed my transition.

Marita A: What’s in your makeup bag?

Mia: I love color, so I have lots of eye shadow and lipstick! I often go with only lip-gloss and mascara. I’m very frugal so I use many different brands but lately I’ve been trying the mineral makeup.

Marita A: How did you keep your skin naturally beautiful?

Mia: Lots of water, a plant based diet, plenty of exercise and rest!  I don’t wear foundation, just a great moisturizer with a SPF of fifty everyday. I’m a skincare fanatic and believe in using natural products. Right now I love the Michelle line.

Marita A: Did you go through any kind of personal/spiritual transformation while going through the process of going natural?

Mia: Yes, I’ve been on a mind, body and spiritual journey for many years. It took me a while but I’m now comfortable in my own skin and all that God gave me including my kinky hair!

Marita A: What are some of your favorite hair styles?

Mia: I love protective styles like French rolls, ponytails and French braids. I also like to wear it down on the weekends in twist outs, braid outs and “wash and go” styles. I enjoy watching YouTube videos to get ideas from other naturalistas.

Marita A: What encouragement can you give to someone who maybe considering going natural?

Mia: Go for it! You will be surprised at how liberating it is. It truly is a journey that requires lots of patience and self acceptance but the experience can be cathartic and transforming.

Mia thanks so much for being an inspiration for women who want to lead a healthy lifestyle, as well as for the naturals who have struggle with the decision to stay natural or relax their hair. We especially appreciate your membership to the Chicago Natural Beauty Meetup.
