Oprah Winfrey turns 59 years old today. Oprah was born on January 29, 1954 in Kosciusko, Mississippi in total poverty. She was raised by her single-teenaged mother, Vernita Lee, and by her grandmother, Hatti Mae Lee. One of her grandmother’s lessons was how to wash clothes in the river and she admonished the young Oprah to pay attention because someday Oprah would have to do it. “Oh no, I won’t.” Oprah thought to herself. Her childhood years were rough and she survived years of sexual abuse by relatives and friends. This gave her great empathy for the rape survivors that would eventually be guests on her show.The first broadcast of The Oprah Winfrey Show was in 1986. Oprah broadened the women’s point of view and she helped everyone realize that every human is important in this world. Oprah became a thought leader that inspired millions to lead better lives.
