“Dear Rachel, I have natural hair and my hair is very dry and brittle. What can I do to change this?”
ANSWER: In my 13 years experience of being natural, what I have found to be the cause of dry brittle hair is lack of moisture. Many people do not realize hair is very similar to skin, it needs to be moisturized daily. Depending on how dry your hair is, you may also need a bi-monthly deep conditioning treatment to help hair retain moisture and shine. Maintaining a home care routine is a non negotiable for healthy natural hair. Check out my top tips for defeating dryness…..
- Don’t use cotton pillowcases, cotton absorbs water and rids the hair of moisture. Sleep in a satin cap or on top of a satin pillowcase. My favorite is the Pillow Bonnet by Hair Routine, its so soft and great for natural hair, it doesn’t hurt that it helps me to fall asleep easier too.
- Eat healthy & drink water. Need I say more? The condition of hair and skin is the window to the overall health of the body. You are what you eat:)
- Water + Oil=True Moisture. Ever experience piling on a ton of oil or butter and your hair came out looking a hot greasy mess? Oil is not a moisturizer by itself, dampen hair with water or leave in conditioner to seal in moisture.
- Ingredients are important! Sulfates are harsh detergents that can rob your hair off moisture. I am not against an occasional wash with a shampoo containing sulfates BUT certainly do not make this a regular habit.

Shampoos and conditioners for 4b children hair? I am stuggling with finding products that I am 100% satisfied for my daughter hair. I’ve used Curls but didn’t like the texture or feel. I been using different shampoos from Pantene to Dark & Lovely kids and a pure natural olive oil as a conditioning treatment and rinse well. Any suggestions?
Beautiful Textures is great
Oh wow, I seen their line in beauty supply stores. Have you tried them for your hair or your daughters? I notice you used quite a few products from following you on IG and FB, do you have a favorite?
I’m new to the Chicago area. Do you know of some good hair salons in the south loop area?
