Spring and summertime always feels like the perfect time to venture out and try something new with my hair. I was in Hawaii a couple of weeks ago and the weather was nice and warm. The hot weather and my massive natural hair are not a good combination. My hair made me super hot and irritated so I decided it was time for a cut. I am not so attached to my hair that the thought of cutting it makes me sentimental, it actually feels like freedom every time I do it.
Typically I only blow dry my hair about 2-3 times a year. I prefer my hair in its natural state and have had my share of horror stories, including my ends turning straight because of heat damage. I really only get it straightened so my ends can be trimmed to perfection. Since I knew going through the whole process would be quite an ordeal I decided to ask my stylist some questions for you, enjoy! Below are her suggestions:I struggled with deciding on whether or not I wanted to do a color touch up or grow out the color and transition to my natural shade. I know color treated hair tends to be weaker and can be easily damaged. I get lots of inquiries on my YouTube channel about my hair color. You will be happy to know since I did decide to get the color retouched, the color is light ash blonde. Here are my top tips for cut and coloring natural hair:
- I love the Devacurl Technique and HIGHLY recommend it for curly hair.
- As always moisturize your hair frequently especially if you decide to color.
- Stay away from shampoos that contain sulfates, opt to use a moisturizing shampoo instead.
- Deep conditioning treatments will enhance color and help maintain a vibrant tone.
- When cutting hair be sure to keep in mind how you will style hair when its back in natural state.
- Consider shrinkage, if you cut it too short keep in mind it will appear shorter when you wash and go with no help of blow dryer.
