In my interviews of women with natural hair, I often ask how others perceive them, especially significant others. Many of the women have had mixed reviews from their loved ones. This question is also popular on the many Facebook pages dedicated to women with natural hair. Most of the women say that men approach them more now that they have natural hair. Thanks to the Hip-Hop group, Brown Audio and a good friend of the duo, I was able to tap into the minds of three very handsome men that dig women with natural hair. Marita A: What is your attraction to natural hair?
Steve “Cya” Carter: My attraction to natural hair is the attraction to natural beauty. I love the clothes to be loud and the beauty to be stripped down and natural; the hair really does it.
Marita A: Would you date a woman that did not have natural hair? Why or why not?
Steve “Cya” Carter: More than likely the woman I date would be natural. You would have to be pretty amazing to sway me if you’re not! The reason is because generally, a woman that is natural is a woman that loves the skin she was born in, literally. And that represents me.
Marita A: What are some of your favorite natural hair styles that women wear?
Steve “Cya” Carter: It’s nothing like seeing big hair. There was a natural hair edition in the Essence Magazine; I pretty much liked everything in there. But I’m a sucker for big hair.
Marita A: At first glance, what is one word that comes to mind when you spot a woman with natural hair?
Steve “Cya” Carter: Art!
Marita A: What is the inspiration behind the “Ms. Natural” song?
Steve “Cya” Carter: The inspiration behind “Ms. Natural” is the pure love for the natural woman. It made the song come easy to me. On top of that, we make music that makes a difference and really speaks on meaningful topics, so this falls right in place.
Marita A: What is your attraction to natural hair?
Sean Ace: Well for face value, I think it looks good, but health and confidence would be a more intelligent answer. It’s impossible to be 100% sure, but when I see a woman with natural hair, I assume she is healthy because she isn’t using chemicals and is aware of what she is putting in her hair. Outside of health reasons, natural styles aren’t the most popular hair choice; it shows that a woman has confidence in her look by going against the grain.
Marita A: Would you date a woman that did not have natural hair? Why or why not?
Sean Ace: Yes, I would. Discrimination is wrong, in any form. Some entertainers have to wear permed hair, weave, or wigs because their job demands it. For example, Sanaa Lathan. If she…me and her…lawd! I’m going to have to leave it right there!
Marita A: What are some of your favorite natural hair styles that women wear?
Sean Ace: A twist out, it’s classic, can’t go wrong with different variations of a twist out. But a faux hawk, locs, or a fro are all dope too.
Marita A: At first glance, what is one word that comes to mind when you spot a woman with natural hair?
Sean Ace: Sexy.
Marita A: What is the inspiration behind the “Ms. Natural” song?
Sean Ace: We make music. So we’re always in the studio, meaning that sometimes ideas just come to us, but we draw inspiration from life. Usually from something we see, hear, or experience. This song specifically came from a conversation me and my brother (Cya) were having about our love for women with natural hair. It was powerful, thus making its way into a song.
Marita A: What is your attraction to natural hair?
Ryan: For me it’s the look, rather the variety of looks that natural women can rock. African American hair is like no other; natural ladies stand out in a crowd.
Marita A: Would you date a woman that did not have natural hair? Why or why not?
Ryan: Most definitely, I would. At the end of the day, I’m not dating your hair. I’m more interested in who you are as a person and how we vibe.
Marita A: What are some of your favorite natural hair styles that women wear?
Ryan: Fro’s will always grab my attention! I love the different pin-up styles too; I’ve seen a lot of ladies get creative with those styles.
Marita A: At first glance, what is one word that comes to mind when you spot a woman with natural hair?
Ryan: Hmmm, this will be a tough one, LOL. It would probably be “wow”!
Marita A: What is your opinion of the “Ms. Natural” song/video?
Ryan: I think its epic because it’s never been done before. There has never been a song about Black men expressing their love and appreciation for women with natural hair. This is essentially the natural woman’s anthem and it couldn’t have come at a better time; it seems that more and more women are rocking their natural hair these days.
