Meet Carol one of my very loyal YouTube Subscribers, I love Carol’s beautiful long twists. Thanks Carol for sharing lots of great tips with my readers. I am looking for more Natural Beauties to feature on MBRO, if you are interested or know of someone please email me here.
How long have you been natural?
I have been natural for a glorious five years. I stopped relaxing my hair in the spring of 2005 but I count from the year I cut off all my relaxed ends which was April 2007. I was also natural all through high school and only got a relaxer because the beautician who did my hair for prom said that it would make my style prettier. LOL! I know better now! The things we do to look cute. LOL!
What inspired you to go natural?
I never really liked the process of getting a relaxer. The smell, the burning no matter if you scratched or not, it just wasn’t for me.
How did you transition?
I wore this mohawk style that allowed me to keep my natural texture flat and wear my relaxed ends straight. It was cute and very good for my life style as I was an active student. When I got tired of that style I used rods but mostly I wore the mohawk.
What is your biggest natural hair challenge?
Hmm that is a good question I would have to say detangling. I DO NOT enjoy the process of detangling my hair. I have gotten better with it over time and continue to learn new techniques, that make the process easier, such as finger detanglingbut it is still a process. Also my hair takes so long to dry and sometimes leads to me catching colds. I leave the towel on my head for about 30 min after I finish washing but my hair still takes about a day to dry for a braid or twist out.
What is your fave natural hair style?
Oh gosh! I love braid outs! It is my absolute fave style. I love my hair wild and free. I’ve also recently become quite addicted to big twist. I wore this style all summer it was low maintenance and cute which is kind of a must for my hair styles.
What products do you use?
I pretty much use everything from the grocery store with the exception of my Giovanni’s leave in conditioner. My staples or favorites are grape-seed oil, castor oil, coconut oil, olive oil, aloe vera gel, shea and mango butter. I mix all of these products to make butters and creams that work great for my skin and hair.
Did you receive any negative comments about going natural?
Not really. I try to ignore negativity. I love my natural hair so it doesn’t really matter what other people have to say about it because I’m satisfied with it. It took me a lot of time and patience to get my hair to the state that it is in now. I’m very proud of my progress. It only helps that my family and friends support me
What advice or suggestions do you have for anyone considering going natural or newly natural?
Do what works for you. Hair “gurus”are great and have a lot of valuable information to share but at the end of the day if it doesn’t work for you, don’t be afraid to try something new.
Please share 3 natural beauty makeup tips
1. Take care of your skin so that wearing make-up feels like an option rather than a must have. I have to remind myself of this.
2. If you have sensitive skin use products such as Bare Minerals and Elf clarifying press powder they are designed to keep skin healthy.
3. Drink your body weight in ounces of water at least 3 days a week. We all have busy lives and can’t make this an everyday commitment but when you do, the results are astounding!
