Marita A: How long have you been natural?
Candice: I have been natural since Feb. 2008.
Marita A: What inspired you to go natural?
Candice: Actually, I went natural on accident. I was pregnant with my first child; my grandmother stated that I shouldn’t use chemicals on my hair. During my entire pregnancy I wore braids; after my daughter was born I had about 2 inches of perm left. At that point I decided cut it and I have been natural since then.
Marita A: Who are your YouTube or Facebook “hairspirations”?
Candice: My YouTube “hairspirations” are Pretty Dimples, AfrikanHairGod, and MsTanish1.
Marita A: What was the most difficult part of transitioning to natural?
Candice: The most difficult challenge I faced while transitioning was the detangling process. I did not have the correct products to detangle my hair, it made washing my hair and braiding it a drag. At the time, I was unaware of the millions of products on the market for natural hair. Researching, attending natural hair events, and surfing YouTube has taught me a great deal of things.
Marita A: How did your family, friends, spouse or significant other react to your hair’s new kinky texture?
Candice: My family was very supportive of the transition. Most of my friends and family members have transitioned as well. My husband would prefer straight hair but says that he still loves me the way that I am. He has also learned a lot about the natural hair community and has embraces it even more today.
Marita A: What’s in your makeup bag?
Candice: In my makeup bag, you will find lotion, eye shadow, lipstick, and a mirror.
Marita A: How did you keep your skin naturally beautiful?
Candice: I keep my skin beautiful by using a olive oil mixed with sugar to exfoliate. I also use Nadinola products in the day and night.
Marita A: Did you go through any kind of personal/spiritual transformation while going through the process of going natural?
Candice: As I stated before, I was pregnant when I transitioned so I needed to transform everything; from my thinking, to my health, to caring for not only myself and husband, but a child.
Marita A: What are some of your favorite hair styles?
Candice: My favorite styles are twist-outs and afro puffs.
Marita A: What encouragement can you give to someone who maybe considering going natural?
Candice: I would tell someone who is transitioning to hang in there. Being natural is one of the best choices that I have made thus far. The beauty of being natural is amazing. I would also tell that person to attend natural hair meetups and find a natural stylist. Last but not least, research is the key.
