Hey Natural Beauties, hope you enjoyed the recent video series I featured on my YouTube channel where I answered your most asked questions. The series was so popular, I want to extend the same opportunity to my blog readers. All you need to do is a post a question in the comments section or reply on Facebook and I will pick one question per week to answer. This week’s question is for advice on how NOT to look a “natural hot mess” read on……
Dear Rachel,
I’ve been without a perm since July 2005. I used to go and get my hair blown out every two weeks, I just stopped doing this last summer. I took a seven month break and wore weaves. Now I’m back to the salon getting my hair straightened. I want to attempt to wear my hair natural. I’ve seen alot of cute style (twisted-out my fav). But don’t want to look a hot mess while I’m experimenting. I’m a bit intimidated with my hair…a little lazy…and just don’t know what my husband is going to think. Any advice you can give to steer me in the right direction is much appreciated.
Signed,
Jane Nappyno:)
- You actually have already taken my first suggestion which is to “STOP BLOWDRYING!” Many people do not know, but over time if you continue to blow dry it, you will alter your curl pattern. The result is hair that is curly in some places mixed with straight ends in others. It is ok to occasionally blow dry, but if you straighten on a regular basis I can guarantee it does more damage than good.
- You don’t have to look a “hot mess” while experimenting. If it makes you feel more confident, try a half wig. I have seen some really cute textured wigs. You can do a braid out, twist out or flat twist underneath the wig until you get comfortable or have your husband’s approval:), and once you are feeling good about your hair, leave the wig at home and rock your natural hair.
this is a cute pic of what a half wig can look like

- My last words of advice are to remember that natural hair is not just about the hair on your head, but your mindset and outlook. It will take time to get use to seeing yourself with big, kinky hair,be sure to encourage and affirm yourself, think positive thoughts and give yourself time to adjust to your new look.
- Most of all you need to have patience! Check out this video it pretty much explains it all:) Enjoy!
