Recently I was selected to participate in the Mega Growth #BritBeautyContest. The #BritBeautyContest is a VIP Blogger invite-only contest, and I’m honored to be considered for this opportunity. Chicago-based blogger Afrobella, and Strength of Nature (the parent company for Mega Growth) are teaming up to take a trip to the UK. Afrobella will select one blogger to travel to the UK with her, and I was asked to share how this trip could change my life and enhance my blog.

Three years ago when I first began blogging, I started with very little knowledge of how the industry works. I didn’t even read blogs on a regular basis, and I only got started because it was something that piqued my curiosity. After writing my first few posts, I called up my good friend and industry expert Santara , she told me about Afrobella. Afrobella’s blog was one of the first I started reading. I enjoyed how she wrote about many different aspects of beauty. Her blog was like reading a great issue of Essence magazine, but even better as it was online! I soon learned that Patrice was also from Chicago, and I reached out to her shortly after to ask if she would attend one of my events and speak to my meetup group about blogging and beauty. It was such an honor to have her attend, because at the time I had a very small meetup group of only 50 members or so. She came and spoke very candidly about being a blogger, her career journey and all of her ups and downs. I was VERY new to blogging and I never forgot how she took the time out of her busy schedule to share career advice; something most other bloggers will not do.
Fast forward three years later and Patrice’s blog is still one of the few I read on a weekly basis. I consider her a trailblazer and I read her blog not just because I genuinely enjoy the content, but because I love to see how far she has come AND where she is going. Taking a trip to the UK would be, “a dream come true,” as traveling is something I long to do more of, but don’t often have the time or resources to pursue. Traveling with Strength of Nature and Afrobella will greatly enhance my blog as it will give my blog international exposure. One of the greatest things I admire about Afrobella is that she is one of the few women of color who has gained international recognition as a blogger. Often times when I read main stream media articles that feature other well-known bloggers, hers is the only brown face I see. She is an inspiration because I see what possibilities and opportunities await me and other African American female bloggers. Even if I am not selected, I thank you Mega Growth for inviting me to participate and giving me this opportunity to share with Afrobella just how much she inspires all of us.
