For decades, there has been very little choice in makeup for women of color. All the major brands basically ignored those of us with “tan” skin, and just a handful catered to dark-skinned women (and not very well, I might add). When I was just starting my career in beauty back in the early ’90s, Bobbi Brown launched her foundation sticks in loads of shades, and I was ecstatic!

That was a great start, but it took many years for other brands to get in the game and start providing a range of shades. Below are several of my favorite brands and products for dark-skinned women. To broaden the playing field a bit, I also sought out the opinions of two of my favorite makeup artists, Kevin James Bennett and Tina Turnbow.

Bobbi Brown

No longer a tiny indie brand, beauty powerhouse Bobbi Brown still holds true to its humble beginnings by offering foundations, powders and concealers in a wide range of shades for women of all skin tones. Her Foundation Sticks($42 each at Sephora) remain a great portable option for on-the-go coverage, and they’re available in 20 different shades.
