You already know that Old Man Winter has officially made his Chicago debut, but do you know what this means for the Naturalista? Sister Girl has to layer ALL of her beauty products to help prevent dry skin and hair. My daughter suffers from eczema, and if your skin is anything like her’s, you know the colder weather causes dry, brittle skin. Saying goodbye to dryness is a head to toe project.
Let’s start with the hair, first. I wash my hair every 7 to 10 days, and because I have color-treated hair, I have to be extra careful with shampoos and conditioners. Recently my stylist gave me a great tip: mix a little essential oil with your conditioner and sit under the steamer. This made my hair really soft and easier to comb through. I also love to use a hair mask; it is wonderful to prevent breakage and hydrate hair from root to tip.
One of my staple products is the Cantu Coconut Milk Shine & Hold Mist leave-in conditioning spray. This helps to hydrate my hair while adding shine to the texture. In the winter, I also love to spray the conditioner, detangle my hair, and then layer a thick hair moisturizer on top. This is especially great for protective styling and good to include in your bed time routine.
In the harsh winter winds, my hair routine is not the only routine that needs adjusting. Since I’m a busy Mom-on-the-go, I often look for products that serve multiple purposes. My absolute favorite foundation/moisturizer for winter is the Tinted Moisturizing Balm by Bobbi Brown cosmetics. It is packed with antioxidants, has great coverage and is wonderful to use as a primer for eyeshadow base or color application. The price is a whopping $54, but it is well worth it.
For the whole body, defeating dryness begins with a warm bath and the right products. Some soaps have a tendency to be drying to the skin, so I definitely recommend taking a close look at ingredients. Lately, I’ve been indulging in a weekly bath routine with Thank God It’s Natural Oatmeal soap. Each soap contains olive oil and cocoa butter, ingredients that your skin will thank you for.
To help seal moisture into the skin, be sure to moisturize while skin is damp. Body oil is one product that has made a huge difference with my daughter’s eczema. Her skin was instantly, noticeably softer and smoother. In my purse, I love to carry Asili’s Amber Sandalwood body butter. It’s very rich and smells wonderful. In fact, I have to be careful when I open the jar for fear of others asking for a sample. Keep your hands off my Asili! 🙂
Last but certainly not least, please don’t forget to give your feet a special treat by massaging moisturizer into skin, giving special attention to your heels. Be sure to put on a pair of cozy socks afterward, and sleep through the night with the socks on. When you wake up, your feet will be so incredibly soft that you will want to repeat this special treatment every night.
My kids have ezcema but their skin is sensitive as well so I have to be very selective on what I use on their skin. However the Dr.Teals products look pretty good. You used it on your children as well?
yes my daughter has eczema, shea butter mixed with oil is good too
