In 10 years, I hope that my daughters will see more faces in the media that are a true representation of who multicultural women really are. In the mainstream media and entertainment industry, women unfortunately are often encouraged to be argumentative and inauthentic. I can honestly say that I have yet to watch one reality show where women are shown as having genuine friendships. Now I know what you are thinking it’s just TV/entertainment, but if you are a young girl and you happen to catch a glimpse of the constant cat fights and back stabbing, it may leave you to believe this is the way adult women must behave.
I’ve also noticed that at an increasingly younger age, girls are given the message that in order to be popular or likable, you must have a boyfriend or look a certain way. My daughter has beautiful natural hair but has been teased for not having straight hair. On almost a weekly basis, she asks if she can have a perm or wear her hair straight. She thinks if she has straight hair she will be more popular and prettier. I believe she has come to this conclusion due to the images in the media and opinions of her peers.
I’m excited to partner with Strength of Nature Global, the makers of African Pride DreamKids for The “Kids Dreaming Big” contest, opened to youth grades 3 – 5. Strength of Nature encourages the next generation to believe in the beauty of their dreams and provides a national platform to pursue them. Scholarship entry is February 2- March 15, 2015 with $3000.00 worth of scholarships offered. The African Pride Dream Kids and fred’s will also host a meet & greet with Cynthia Bailey and one of our lucky scholarship winners on Saturday, April 4th in Tunica, Mississippi. Join me in making the dreams of today, the realities of tomorrow.
