On Monday I usually write a nice uplifting spiritual post about lifestyle makeovers. Today after viewing this video I knew I had to do something different. I am angry and disappointed about Sheryl Underwood’s comments about “afro hair.” You’ve just got to see it for yourself to believe it!! African American hair being described as “nappy and nasty” european is long, silky straight and beautiful……
If this makes you angry tweet @SherylUnderwood and @TheTalk_CBS tell them what you think about the comments.
Wow! Are you kidding me! I know there’s a such thing as freedom of speech but, wow!
I listened and I don’t agree with you. She didn’t say afro hair was nasty she said it was nasty to keep it. and the long and silky statement was what she said about the other comment about keeping hair, we only hear what we want to hear. and we are quick to take offense. Even if she said what you thought she said, do you believe it? Learn to pick your battles.
I pick my battles wisely and if it offensive to me I use my blog or social media platform to speak out about it, as I did today. I just viewed the video again and what bothers me is the underlying negative tone when she refers to afro hair as nappy AND not okay to keep because that is nasty. However she is okay with keep white hair because it is beautiful, straight and silky. I take issue with that. We can agree to disagree. Thank you for visiting my blog.
Anita,
I just watched the video of Sheryl’s negative comments about afro hair. Sheryl said keeping afro hair “is just nasty.” When Sara Gilbert responded about how she keeps her child’s hair as well, Sheryl said, “but it’s probably beautiful and silky.” Anita do you understand the juxtaposition? Sheryl blatantly compared afro hair to white hair as being not as beautiful as white hair.
No one should make a dehumanizing comment about anyone’s natural hair. Sheryl is obviously a 2013 buffoon on The Talk. She also needs to apologize to all those (including me) happy, natural black women with afro hair.
Moreover, I wouldn’t trade my beautiful natural hair for straight hair any day because I love my hair in its natural state. I think straight hair is beautiful, and I think afro hair is just as equally beautiful. I also have never looked at my hair as nasty. Sheryl is promoting self-hate on her show. I hope young black, natural kids are not watching this show.
Also, thanks Rachel for sharing this information in your blog because I had the same reaction.
thank you for sharing your thoughts.
WOW! All I can truly say is…WOW!! I really shouldn’t be surprised at Sheryl Underwood, she has changed the tide and seem to have forgotten from whence she come. I have attended 3 of your Natural Seminars, Hair Shows, etc, Rachel and all of them have inspired me as well as keep me in the “I’m proud to be an African-American” mode! I agree w/your anger and issue w/Sheryl. I completely feel the same and honestly, I’m appalled at her comment(s).
thanks for visiting my blog and your support!
Well said, Arny…my sentiments exactly!
