When it comes to managing natural hair, it is absolutely essential to have the right tools and techniques. For many new Naturalistas, it can be very challenging to transition from a relaxer to kinky thick hair. Many people find that wearing  straight hair is easier because of the straightened texture. You can just get up and go in the morning! This is not the case with natural hair. Many women discover that you must tame your tresses the night before, or be prepared to put a little extra time in during the morning. Over the years, between myself and my three daughters, I’ve learned a few tips and today I am sharing my best practices with you.

A good brush can make a big difference when you are trying to comb through a child’s tangled hair. Every morning when I sit down to comb my daughter’s hair it usually results in lot of tears. My girls hate it when I comb their hair, but I think I have finally found a brush that has solved that problem. For years I’ve used a Denman brush on my girls’ hair, but a few weeks ago, Kimble Beauty  sent me a Grooming Brush and I couldn’t wait to test it out. One morning I decided to switch out theDenman and use the Kimble brush. My daughter sat still and did not cry the entire time! The Kimble brush is now a regular part of our morning routine, and I highly recommend it. Be sure to invest in a wide tooth comb as well.

One of the most frequently asked questions I receive is, “What can I do about dry, brittle hair?” This is a big issue for most Naturalistas, as natural hair has a tendency to be drier than most textures. For this reason you have to hydrate and moisturize the hair on a daily basis. The easiest and most convenient way is to use a leave in conditioner. MY DNA Leave-In Conditioner helps to detangle hair and is a lightweight conditioner that improves the condition of the hair.

It is very easy to become overwhelmed at the thought of combing out a curly tangled mane of natural hair. What works best for me is to separate the hair into sections, spray  hair with leave in conditioner and comb the hair from tip to root.  I also use my fingers quite a bit to help minimize snagging and or breakage.

Once you’ve finished sectioning and combing the hair out, don’t forget to seal in moisture by applying a creamy product or oil while the hair is still damp.  This will make the hair much easier to style and it will stay smooth and shiny all day. The MY DNA Moisturizing Hair Butter provides moisture and conditioners to natural hair textures while eliminating frizz.  Monoi de Tahiti and Shea Butter are key ingredients, as both help to improve hair aesthetics and give hair the specific curl pattern you desire. What are your tried and true techniques and tools for taming your natural hair?
