I don’t know how I’m feelin’ about this photo that popped up on my Instagram feed this morning. Especially after last night’s screening of “In Our Heads About our Hair” a documentary that discussed black women and the journey to love natural hair. A part of me is excited to see Oprah with a big afro the other part feels why is that when natural hair is finally embraced in the media people tend to make it look like a costume, like its on display. My next question “Is that a wig?” Oprah claims to be natural and has publicly worn her hair natural before, why can’t she just wear her own hair out? How are you feeling about this cover? Am I over thinking it????
Oprah’s Natural Hair-ish???

I love the photo. I think it is a great thing for black women to finally embrace their natural hair and the mainstream is embracing it as well. We have the power to change what images are beautiful if we stand our grown for what we believe is beautiful. I am not sure about the costume part. I think the different styles that us naturals are able to wear are a form of art and it should be put on display. Black women have been told for too long that they were not pretty enough or their hair was nappy so forth. We have been put on display with our bodies it is time we are put on display for our beauty too.
It is a beautiful photo, thanks for commenting.
This entire photo screams “Hollywood!” Just as her face and body have been airbrushed, so has her “supposedly” natural. I think this picture pokes fun at those of us who have embraced our natural hair and wear it proudly.
I don’t think it pokes fun but I do think it screams Hollywood, not sure if I have a problem with that.
It’s doing a bit too much, I love my natural hair and I’ve also seen pictures of Oprah with her natural fro and it was beautiful. Even if the they teased her hair to death and I know her stylist is awesome, it’s a little over the top for my taste
it is over the top for sure but it works when you trying to sell magazines:)
To me, a wig kind of negates the whole idea of being “natural”. Oprah certainly has a beautiful head of hair, but this is not it.
I agree, a wig is not natural but she still looks beautiful.
Hi Rachel,
I don’t know how i feel about this either. It looks like a head piece Cher would wear. Hmmm I guess what I really want to know is what does the articles have to say. feeling a little confused.
I want to read the article too.
I think once you read the captions to the left of the photo you understand the photo. I don’t think the photo can be “judged” without taking into consideration the article the picture is promoting. The cover doesn’t state it is Oprah’s Natural hair…it says “let’s talk about hair…how to…” It definitely draws people into the cover and it will make you want to read the article. High fashion does these kind of things and for a fashion cover it is appropriate.
Great thoughts!
I don’t believe Oprah wears her hair natural…she did a cover last year (September if I’m not mistaken) “wearing her hair natural”; when that issue was published, there was a big buzz as to whether or not her was natural….I think her hair stylist did her hair, let it air-dry and then teased it to get the “natural” look….I believe this was done again, but with a “little” heat used after her hair was air dried.
