This is THEE product review many of you have been waiting for! Let me explain: a few weeks ago, I was whisked away to Miami for the Ultimate Beauty GetAway by Beautiful Textures. I was invited along with an exclusive group of beauty influencers to hear about a new product, the Texture Management System. I did not try the product right away, but as soon as I did and posted the photos on Instagram, the questions started pouring in. People wanted to know, “What is it?” “How does it work?” “Is it a kiddie perm?” Well, I tried the product on my daughter’s hair and I intentionally waited about two weeks to post this review because I wanted to see the after-effects.

Here’s how the TMS works: the box includes an instruction guide, shampoo, conditioner and product sample packet for maintenance.  You start the treatment by shampooing the hair, then you follow with the Inner Active Leave In-Conditioner. The conditioner is supposed to loosen the curl and prepare the hair for straightening. There were a couple of things that made me nervous about trying the product on my daughter’s hair; 1. you have to wear gloves while you are applying the conditioner, and 2. you must leave the conditioner on for 20 minutes before blow drying. These two instructions immediately took me back to relaxer days, but I continued on with the application because I was really curious, and my daughter was over the moon with excitement.

I sectioned my daughter’s hair into four parts and set my timer for 20 minutes. Immediately, I could tell her hair was getting straighter than normal. Without the use of this product, her hair is normally very tangled after washing and conditioning, making it quite a challenge to comb out. I used my Denman brush and starting blow drying; then, after her hair was dry, I flat ironed it. Now here’s the thing when you have natural hair: if the hair has not been straightened effectively, once it is ready to be curled or flat ironed, the hair will have a James Brownish look to it! You know what I mean? It just doesn’t look “bone straight.” For this reason, I was not a fan of the finished product; however, my daughter loved it and begged to wear her curls to bed. I, of course, said no and immediately began to pin curl her hair, wrapping up her tresses for the night. In the morning, her hair was still straight but she had no curls left. I am clueless as to why her curls did not last; maybe she should have slept in rollers, maybe I needed a serum to go along with the system–I dunno, but the following morning she was back in a braided hair style. I probably just need to go ahead and sign up for somebody’s flat ironing and blow drying class. This is why I do not straighten my hair at home; I never like the results because my hair never gets reallllly straight.

Can you tell how much she is feelin' her new straight hair?

Can you tell how much she is feelin’ her new straight hair?

Okay, so a whole week passed with my daughter begging me to try the product again because she liked the look of her “somewhat-straight” hair better. I agreed to do it because I wanted to wash her hair and check for heat damage and make sure that her curls returned. I was happy to see her curls were in tact; they were a bit straighter than before, but she definitely still had a head full of curly hair. For the second time around, I cranked my flat iron up higher and noticed that made a difference; her hair came out really pretty! Unfortunately, when she woke up in the morning, her curls had already fallen and we were back to braids AGAIN.  Soooooooo in a nutshell, my honest review is that the TMS is good for naturalistas who are looking for options and have some experience with blowdrying and flatironing. If you are like me and rarely straighten your hair, you may not be pleased with your results. I want any at-home product to give me salon-professional results. I didn’t get that with TMS, but for the record, I think my technique had a lot to do with it. Now that I’ve used the system on my guinea pig (my daughter), I do plan to use it on my hair when the weather is warmer and I must check out a few YouTube videos to help me learn how to blow dry and flat iron like a pro. As always, I will share my experience; follow me on social media to stay up-to-date!

The morning after, hair is still straight but no curls. You can pretty much tell how she felt about that! LOL
